Can you properly reapply clear coat to a car?

By a professional of course, without having to repaint.

I've seen pictures of clear coat jobs where it was peeling after awhile - not sure if these DIY jobs.

Or can you sand down the factory clear coat a bit, then reapply a thin layer on top?

Well there would still be prep work involved.

You would need to wetsand the existing paint and remove all contaminants. Otherwise it would peal.

I wanted to get my old 97 civic re-cleared back in 2005...the dude told me that it wouldn't be worth the cost.

Then again, it WAS a cheapie civic. Perhaps if it was a higher end car...
