Magna trying to buy Opel

http://www.canadiandriver.com/2009/0...d-for-opel.htm

They have some nice cars, that I wouldn't mind taking a good look at, if they were to bring them over here.

Then just go to any GM/Saturn dealership.

Re: Magna trying to buy Opel

All done. Magna owns 20% of Opel, along with the Ruskies, GM, and Opel employees

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090601/...a_us_gm_opel_5

In other GM news, Hummer has been sold to an unidentified buyer (Arrrh-nold?), and Magna's also taking a look at acquiring Saturn. Boy, isn't this a feel-good story for Belinda, goes from political scandal to part-owner of possibly two of GM's divisions.

It won't be too long until Putin starts demanding that manufacturing takes place in Mother Russia since he's funding a big part of Frankie's operations now.

Re: Magna trying to buy Opel

Penske agrees to buy Saturn; will continue to sell the GM-made vehicles, along with possibly these?

http://www.renaultsamsungm.com/main/index.jsp

So all that remains is Saab. Wonder who's gonna step in to take them? Volvo?

That's where you're completely wrong. GM took the Opel Vectra platform, bolted a crappy suspension to it, detuned the engine, cheapened the whole car and sold it as the Caterra.

Re: Magna trying to buy Opel

vectras are nice.. i remember going to europe and getting one as a rental.. the cooling fan stopped working and my dad ran a switch all the way to the fan so he can turn it off and on (cuz we were outside of permitted driving regions lol and couldnt call their service guys to fix it)
we get back to germany and they charged us for "tampering with the car" like 500$ lol
should have let the effer overheat and blow
but yeah european cars are nicer tuned for performance not for emissions like here

I always thought the Volvo Group is like a huge ass thing with lots of division, and cars is only one division of Volvo.

Doesn't Volvo Group deals with Marines, Aero, Construction, Finance, IT, Bus, Trucks, and a load of other stuff?

Unless you mean Ford is part-owner of the Volvo Automotive brand line.

Enlighten me please.

oh ya that's true. Forgot about all that stuff... But why would any of the other volvo's that have nothing to do with automotive industry purchase an automotive company when they already sold off their own?

that is true..

so i guess Ford does own a large chunk of Volvo automotive.

So would it be true that Ford are the guys building the sexy T5 engines?
Because I know americans likes to build big engine or supercharge, instead of turbocharge.

**Update**

Penske deal to buy Saturn falls through. GM will retire Saturn, like they did with Pontiac.

Re: Magna trying to buy Opel

Aaaaaaand the hits just keep on coming...
Quote:
DETROIT – A Swedish automaker has backed out of a deal to buy Saab from General Motors Co., casting serious doubt on the future of the troubled brand.

Koenigsegg Group AB said Tuesday it has decided to scrap the deal, which was announced in June. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed by GM.

...

GM has had trouble shedding its brands as it tries to restructure and focus on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac.

GM's board decided earlier this month to back out of a deal to sell its European Opel unit to a group led by Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International Inc. Auto dealership chain owner and former race car driver Roger Penske in September ended plans to buy the Saturn brand after an agreement to get cars from France's Renault fell through.

The GM board has chosen to phase out Saturn, a possible fate for Saab.
Nobody wants to buy GM crap.

I don't understand why they would 'phase out' and not sell...what the heck are they worried that these other people will make it better than they ever could?

I read the full article and the problem with the Saab deal wasn't about the $$$, it was the group of investors with Koenigsegg couldn't agree where to take Saab after they would acquire it. Penske was trying to get Renault's Chinese operations to build Saturns, but that deal fell through too. Only on the Opel deal did GM themselves pull out. So it's not all about dollars and cents, but about the positioning or manufacturing thats causing these deals to fall apart.

Re: Saab sold to Spyker

So that piece is finally taken care of. Pontiac and Saturn are wound down. Dunno what's new with the Opel peice, if that's still in play or not.
